The practical difference
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the more configurable headphone. Its LDAC support, adaptive profiles, and app controls make it easier to tailor to your phone, room, commute, or office routine. The tradeoff is physical: Sony abandoned the folding design, so the case is larger and less forgiving in a packed bag.
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra is the more travel-first headphone. It keeps the foldable geometry Sony dropped and leans harder into silence, comfort, and spatial processing. It is less interesting for codec/spec obsessives, but it is easier to recommend to someone who wants to open the case, put headphones on, and make the outside world disappear.
Which one should most people buy?
Most MyHiFi readers should start with Sony because the WH-1000XM5 has the stronger overall score and more flexible feature set. But if your actual use case is airplanes, trains, offices, and carry-on bags, Bose deserves a serious look even with a lower site score. This is exactly why MyHiFi comparisons focus on fit, not just a winner.
Price and value check
At the prices currently represented on MyHiFi — Sony around $399 and Bose around $429 — Sony is the stronger value. If Bose is discounted below Sony, the travel/comfort advantage becomes easier to justify. If Sony is discounted, it becomes the obvious default for most buyers.
Alternatives to consider
- Apple AirPods Max — best if Apple ecosystem integration and build quality matter more than weight or codec flexibility.
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 — best if battery life and value matter more than maximum ANC.
- JBL Tune 760NC — cheaper ANC option if you are not shopping flagship pricing.
